Indoor caravan storage, roofed or outdoor:
how to choose the right pitch

We offer three kinds of storage at our yard in Vilasacra: outdoor, roofed and indoor. Indoor caravan storage gives the most protection, but the price gap between the three is real, so it is worth knowing what each one protects against before you choose. This guide sets out the differences plainly, including when the cheapest option is the right one.

What a caravan needs protecting from on the Costa Brava

Owners from the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany tend to think of storage as protection from cold and wet. Here the picture is different.

• Sun. The Alt Empordà gets a lot of it, all year round. Strong UV is hard on acrylic windows, roof lights, rubber seals, decals and tyre sidewalls. Over several seasons it can dull paintwork and dry out sealant.
• Wind. The Tramuntana, the north wind that blows down from the Pyrenees, can be strong for several days at a time. It carries dust and grit and puts strain on anything loose.
• Rain. Less frequent than in northern Europe, but it can be heavy when it comes, especially in autumn. Heavy downpours find any weak seal.
• Frost. Winters are mild compared with home for most of our customers, but clear inland nights can still drop below freezing. Water systems should be drained whatever storage you pick.

With that in mind, here is how the three options compare.

Outdoor storage

Your caravan stands on a marked pitch inside our fenced, gated yard, covered by the same CCTV and access control as every other part of the site.

Suits you if:

• your caravan is fairly new or its seals and roof are in good order
• you use it for much of the year and it is only with us between trips
• you are keeping costs down and are happy to fit a breathable cover or check it after windy spells

Things to know: the caravan is exposed to sun and weather. A good breathable cover helps with UV, but make sure it is designed for caravans and tied down properly, because a loose cover in the Tramuntana can rub the paintwork. A wash before storage and a check of the roof seals once a year go a long way.

Roofed storage

A covered, ventilated pitch with a roof overhead. If you have been searching for covered caravan storage, this is it.

Suits you if:

• the main thing you want is to keep direct sun and rain off the roof
• your caravan is older and the roof or roof lights are the parts you worry about
• you want most of the benefit of indoor storage for a lower price

Things to know: the roof takes the brunt of UV and water, so a roofed pitch deals with the two things that cause most long-term damage. Because the space is ventilated, air keeps moving, which helps keep damp down. The caravan can still pick up wind-blown dust, so expect to wash it now and then.

Indoor storage

A space inside our storage hall, fully out of the weather. The hall has a clearance of 4.5 m, so it takes most caravans and motorhomes, and we can store units up to 12 m long.

Suits you if:

• your caravan or motorhome is new or high value
• it will be with us for long periods, for example all winter or for a full year between visits
• you want it to come out looking the way it went in, with minimal cleaning

Things to know: indoor storage is the most expensive option, and it is the best protection against sun, rain, wind and dust. Insurers often look favourably on indoor storage, but that is their decision, so ask yours before you choose.

Cost side by side

Prices vary by length (measured including the tow bar). For a caravan up to 6 m, the 2026 yearly prices including VAT are:

• Outdoor: €373
• Roofed: €599
• Indoor: €746

For a caravan up to 8 m:

• Outdoor: €466
• Roofed: €759
• Indoor: €932

A simple way to decide

1. How long will it be with us? A few weeks between trips: outdoor is usually enough. A full winter or a full year: consider roofed or indoor.
2. What condition is the roof in? If you have had leaks or the sealant is getting old, a roof over the caravan is worth more than anything else.
3. What is it worth to you? For a new caravan, the extra cost of indoor storage is small next to the cost of replacing a cracked roof light or faded decals.
4. What does your insurer say? Some policies set conditions on where a caravan is kept. Check before you book.
